Beyond Electrification is Out: Why 66.6% of Europe's Truck Charging Network is Not AFIR-Ready
Our research paper is out.
Beyond Electrification: The Emergence of Transport Energy Infrastructure - Research Paper No. 01/2026 is now published.
We wrote it because Europe has a delivery problem, not a generation problem.
As of November 2025, EAFO counts 937 heavy-duty charging locations in Europe. Only 313 have at least one charger with 350kW. That is 33.4% AFIR-compliant. Source: Paper Chapter 8.2, p.32.
Why? A new grid connection takes 5-15 years.
In the paper we define a new category to close this gap: TEI - Transport Energy Infrastructure.
TEI has four characteristics:
- Cross-Domain System Integration - transport, energy and data in one system
- Demand-Anchored Siting - build where mobility actually needs energy
- Operational Resilience - AFIR uptime and data as built-in requirement
- Active System Participation - infrastructure that generates and returns energy
And we show what it looks like in practice: a complete turnkey system from a single source - from kinetic energy harvesting where braking happens anyway, to lithium-free solid-state storage, to 150/350kW+ smart charging, to fleet intelligence and carbon dashboard - one integrated ecosystem.
